The Magic of Love and Democracy

Over the past week, I had a few friends come down to Philly from New York.  Lauren and I visited Philadelphia's Magic Gardens, which is an urban mosaic-tile wonderland right on South Street.  Over the years, I have walked by this spot many times and have witnessed it grow ever more intricate and interesting.  The artist, Isaiah Zagar, has mosaic designs on over 100 public venues throughout Philadelphia.

For those of you who grew up in the 70's, you might remember a children's television show called The Magic Garden.  I looked for Carole and Paula, Sherlock the Squirrel and the Chuckle Patch....but these magic gardens on South Street are definitely not the home of our childhood fantasy TV show... :-)

Kyle and Shawna joined George and me on Sunday to walk through Love Park and to witness Occupy Philly up close and personal.  Although I respect the protestors for their commitment to their cause and for living in those conditions, I have to admit that even after visiting the site of Occupy Philly, I am still not entirely sure how they are actually accomplishing anything...but I really do hope that one day soon I'm proven wrong...
